Induction Bending
Kubes Steel is your source for custom rolling and bending of steel and metal products as well as the exclusive provider of induction bending service in the Greater Toronto area of Southern Ontario.
Our shop is certified to ISO9000, CSA W47.1 and have programs in place for AWS D1.1 and ASME Sect IX. Contact us today, or watch our induction bending videos to see more.
What is Induction Bending?
Induction Bending is a precise, computer controlled technique where an induction current is fed through a coil to locally heat a workpiece such as a pipe or tube. The section is then slowly pushed through the coil while a clamped rotating arm bends it. The section continuously quenched with water to keep the heat ban to a minimum.
What material can be used?
Any conductive metals can undergo induction bending and the most common types are carbon, alloy and stainless steels. Shapes that can be formed with induction bending include pipe, tube, channels, square, rectangle and beams.
Why use Induction Bending?
Induction bending has many benefits over traditional cold forming. It can form thinner wall sections to tighter radii without the use of expensive equipment and tooling required for cold bending. The process will minimize cross sectional distortion and die marks which would otherwise show up in other processes.
Some of the main benefits of induction bending include:
• Large diameter sections can be bent to a very small radii with minimal cross sectional distortion.
• Thin walled sections can be bent to small radii with minimal cross sectional distortion.
• Material surface will be left unscarred with minimal tool marks.
• Tooling cost is minimal.
• Precise control of bending radius and angle with detailed reporting and certifications.
• Low cost straight material can be formed to the final shape without welding.
• Parts can be formed with straight tangents meaning reduced splices and field welding costs significantly reduced.
• No lubricants needed.
Some of the most common industries where induction bending is needed are:
• Pipelines for gas or liquids
• Energy generation
• Oil and petrochemical
• Power plants
• Shipbuilding
• Water treatment
• Structural sections for buildings and bridges

Bending Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) to a tight radius with low material distortion is one of Kubes Steel’s specialties thanks to our experienced craftspeople and our in house induction bender. We recently completed the custom bending service on these 14″ by 10″ rectangular hollow structural sections to a precise 90°. Induction bending was used to…
Kubes Steel specializes in crafting custom staircases using the latest technology in induction bending. Induction bending allows us to create curves and angles that were previously impossible, giving our staircases a unique and striking appearance. Our skilled craftsmen take pride in creating stunning and functional monumental staircases that are tailored to meet the needs and…
Induction Bending of over 1000 plate segments. This job required induction bending of heavy plate for our customer in the metals industry. The plates were 1 1/8” thick – Induction Bending allowed for plates to be formed with tight radius without cracking.
The North Market Building of the St. Lawrence Market complex in Toronto, Ontario is currently undergoing a major redevelopment project requiring the replacement of all structural sections. Kubes Steel is Induction Bending all of the structural beams for the roof. You can see the Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel roof beams in the artist’s rendering of…
At Kubes Steel, induction bending is one of our specialties. Our skilled operator performed the induction bending service on these thick stainless steel pipe sections. Due to the thickness, careful preparation had to be taken to ensure a proper bend without damaging the pieces.
Kubes Steel is your one stop shop for fabrication. We provided all the services needed to fabricate this 30 ton heavy industrial lift ring, including connector fittings, cold bending and welding. All pieces are load tested in the shop and will be delivered to the customer ready to assemble.
Our team induction bends sections of pipe to customer requirements and inspects the finished product.
