2026.02.26 – Multi-Dimensional Bending

A specialty staircase designer required a custom brass handrail with complex, multi-dimensional geometry — curves transitioning across multiple planes in a single continuous piece. Brass is unforgiving: it marks easily, work-hardens unpredictably, and any surface damage or kinking is immediately visible on the finished product. Standard bending approaches used for structural steel simply don’t apply.

Kubes Steel worked closely with the staircase designer to understand the full 3D geometry of the handrail and map out a bending sequence that would achieve the required curves without stressing the material beyond its limits. Tooling selection and handling procedures were carefully considered to protect the brass surface throughout every stage of the process.

The handrail was bent progressively through its multi-plane geometry using controlled bending techniques suited to non-ferrous material. Special attention was paid to surface protection at every contact point — no marks, no flat spots, no kinking. The result visible in the photo shows smooth, consistent curves transitioning cleanly through the compound geometry.

The finished handrail was delivered to spec and ready for installation — exactly what the staircase designer needed. When the geometry gets complicated and the material demands respect, they know where to bring the work.
